Cat-astrophe for the bookies as favourite obliges

The hotly anticipated inaugural running of the Brahma Beer Cat Grand National turned out to be a spectacular non-event with Australian raider Roscoe a no-show and Sarah, having been a late entry, being an even later withdrawal.

After several large gins, official starter Mr B Allsup held the over eager field at the tapes for far too long, causing the 'Hayloft Four' (Brilliant, Beguiledy-No Name, Hedwig and Alamshar) to lose interest in proceedings and retire back to the shade of their favoured spot out of reach of snapping greyhound jaws.

The usually bold Giant ran out at the first and then played dead, lying upside down in the middle of the yard waiting for the on-course vet to arrive to tickle her tummy. Her wily antics left the race at the mercy of red-hot favourite The Evil Genius who duly hacked up, leaving the bookies weeping into their satchels.

Before rushing off to play squash, overwhelmed part-owner Dickie Sims (pictured) said: "This is a true brahma. I could really get the hang of this jump racing and I'm thinking of asking Lee Freedman to enter Monsam for the Nakayama Grand Jump next year."

Were there any late scratchings?

we are concerned the race was rigged - how else would the other starters all lie low or just drop out?

so what anti-post odds have we for the 2008 renewal?
Does The Evil Genius get rehandicapped?

Word on the street is that The Evil Genius has been made a lucrative offer to appear in the Nakayama Grand Jump next year. He might also take in the Catmandu Derby en route.

Would Francesca or Sarah go all the way to Catmandu for the prized ride?
