The racing has been coming thick and fast this week. Not to mention the seemingly non-stop sales (who needs another breeze-up?). Obviously the highlight for us was Jill Dawson's superb win at Warwick yesterday. The TV commentator said it was Kirsty Milczarek's 16th career win. Four of those have been for this stable (on Jill twice, La Gessa and By Storm). Hopefully there will be more to come for us all as Kirsty (pictured here galloping Jill at home last Saturday) is also set to ride the Moszkowiczes' horses this year. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Milton's Keen in action for Henry and Rosemary this year. He has a great attitude and seems to have really relaxed since joining us at the start of the year.
I wasn't at Warwick as I'd been sent by the boss to deputise at Windsor for Brief Goodbye's race. I get nervous enough as it is when they run but being saddled with the extra responsibilty of saddling is enough to send me into gibbering wreck territory. Fortunately, there are always enough friendly faces around offering to help out at the races. I'd already lined up Carol the box driver to help saddle but Micky Fenton also kindly asked (vested interest, I suppose, as he would have fared worst if I'd cocked it up but Micky is also a genuinely nice guy) and Tom Townsend, travelling head lad for Stuart Williams and father of our friend in Brisbane, Sarah Tidmarsh, was another to offer to come to my aid.
And, on the subject of Sarah, the second best win of the weekend (or perhaps equal first) was that of Somewhere Safer, a filly trained by her husband Michael and part-owned by my husband. We'd seen 'Dolly', as she's known, on our visit to Australia last November. She's a really sweet, kind chestnut who would fit right in in this yard. Brilliant to hear of her debut success and congratulations to Michael, Sarah, Liam, Jamie and Finn.
Encouraged by Somewhere Safer's victory and the sight of Steve Harley at Newmarket on Saturday for Cockney Rebel's Guineas win, John is now considering writing to Neil Young to see if he'd like to join us all in Queensland next time the filly runs. As any fan of the great man's music will have spotted, she takes her name from a line in Like A Hurricane - in my opinion his best song, especially the live version.
That brings me to the third best filly of the weekend: Finsceal Beo. Not many people would have her in third place. In fact, today's Racing Post proclaims her as 'the best filly in the world'. She certainly looks like she will earn that lofty title but, for now, in our own little corner of Newmarket, we'll reserve that for Jill.
